Obituary

A graveside service celebrating the life of Jennifer Lynne “Jenny” (Philipps) Welsh, age 73, a lifelong resident of Granville, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 7, at Welsh Hills Cemetery with Dave Mason officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, at McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 South Prospect Street in Granville, where the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 85 of Newark will have a service at 6:00 p.m.

A direct descendant of Thomas Philipps and Theophilus Rees who setted the Welsh Hills in 1803, Jenny was born June 17, 1949 in Newark, Ohio to the late Samuel David and Helen Olive (Hartman) Philipps. She passed away on Friday, March 31, 2023 at Riverside Methodist Hospital after a brief illness.

Jenny was a 1967 graduate of Granville High School. She was employed at State Farm Insurance and then by Denison University for over 30 years where she worked in the Learning Resources Center that was based in the university library.

Jenny was passionate about helping veterans and their families and was a very proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1989. She served as past District 6 President, and was the current Treasurer for the Levi Philipps Unit 85, Newark, Ohio, and was also the chair for various committees.

She is survived by two daughters, Amy E. Welsh and Jennifer “Annie” (Michael) Quintrell, all of Granville; granddaughter, Megan E. (Kristofer) Kasson; three great-grandchildren, Logan G., James S., and Sloane E. Kasson; a brother, Warren C. (Cheryl) Philipps of Johns Creek, Georgia; sisters-in-law, Patricia A. Tatham of Columbus and Nancy S. (James) Dumbauld of Newark; 14 nieces and nephews, and many great and great-great-nieces and nephews, and many cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of almost 49 years, James F. Welsh, who passed away on March 22, 2017; and by two sisters, Sylvia Dee (Philipps) McClain and Suzanne L. (Philipps) Wiget; brother, Andrew Philipps; brother-in-law, Jack Tatham, and many aunts and uncles.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Jenny’s Name to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 85 Veterans Widows Fund, 16 Samson Place, Granville, OH 43023.
