Obituary

Frances Kocinski Starinchak, an understated yet strong, fiercely loyal and caring woman passed away December 24, 2022 at Otterbein Senior Living, Granville, at the age of 82. She was born in Youngstown, Ohio to the late Chester J. and Anna Marie (Matyevich) Kocinski.

A 1957 graduate of Struthers High School, Fran originally attended Kent State and then transferred to The Ohio State University where she graduated in 1962 with a B.S. in medical technology.  She was also member of Alpha Chi Omega social sorority. It was on a carpool ride back to Youngstown when she met Edward “Doc” Starinchak who would become her husband of 51 + years. Together Fran and Ed built a lifetime of friends and family.  In retirement they enjoyed their hobby farm and building their dream log home in Granville. Fran often said that Ed had the vision, and she was the general contractor.  For those that knew the family closely, she was their rock and cornerstone.

Of traditional values, heads-down work ethic, thrifty, prudent, resilient, and determined, Fran represented The Silent Generation well.  She possessed a savvy, keen mind but was also a kind and generous person who didn’t hesitate to share and give back.  Whether as a volunteer teaching a science class about microorganisms or feeding the neighborhood kids with her famous “Frandwiches,” or showing compassion for animals, her character was all about support and giving care to others.  In many ways, she was your consummate team player who took pride leading from behind.  She was a member of both Ohio Ecological Food & Farm Association and Ohio Farm Bureau, who believed in being a good steward of the land.  Her gardening and gourmet culinary talents were appreciated by family and many friends over the years.  Most of all, she will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother who was the rudder for the family. Her pleasant disposition, even whimsical nature at times, will be missed by all.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Edward Starinchak, Ph.D. and Melinda Lewis and Joe and Kelly Starinchak; grandchildren, Bela, Jonah, Joshua, and Jacob; brother and sister-in-law, Chester Kocinski and Kris Wagner; and brother in-law Vincent Carr.

In addition to her parents, Fran was preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. Starinchak, M.D., and sisters, Patricia Carr and Marilyn Kocinski.

Per Fran’s wishes, a private graveside service was held at Maple Grove Cemetery, Granville and a private family Memorial Mass will be held at The Church of St. Edward the Confessor, where Fran was a member.

Memorial contributions may be made to The James Cancer Hospital C/O The Ohio State University Foundation, 1480 W. Lane Ave., Columbus OH 43221.
