A memorial service celebrating the life of John L. Sullivan, 82, of Granville, will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday at Second Baptist Church, 19 W. National Dr., Newark, with Rev. Bob Davidson as celebrant. Military honors will be rendered by Licking County Veterans Alliance following the service at the church.
John passed away September 17, 2019 at his home. He was born in Columbus, Ohio to the late Lawrence and Irma Sullivan.
A retired Staff Sergeant with the United States Marine Corps, John did multiple tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star Combat V, and Purple Heart for his acts of valor in combat. After retirement, John embarked in a second career that spanned 28 years as an over the road truck driver finally retiring from TMC.
John was a member of Second Baptist Church where he contributed to the Outreach Program, NRA, and a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans, Bronze Star Buddies, and O.I.D.A.. He enjoyed a life-time of being a HAM radio enthusiast and operator. He will be remembered as an amusing and loving person who had a zest for life.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Shirley A. Sullivan; children, Michael (Janice) Sullivan and Deborah Martin; grandchildren, Miranda Sullivan; great grandchildren, Dylan, Alyssa, and Nevaeh; sister, Patricia Fosdick; and sister-in-law, Barbara Sullivan.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Melvin; and son-in-law, Arthur Martin.
