We would like to send our most heartfelt condolences to you and your family at this time of loss. Jim was a great humanitarian and contributed so much to his family and community. You all should be so proud. Mom and Dad wanted so much to come and pay their respects but are unable to do so without assistance. They wanted me to tell you all that you have their love and prayers at this time of great loss.

Jenny, Patty, Nancy and families - I am grateful when friends send me news of what is going on in Granville, but hate it when the news is sad. My memories of Jim (Jimmy) go back many years, even as kids in the 3rd grade. That year I was in the hospital for several weeks and home for even more. My classmates each created a basket of cards and gifts to open one per day. I remember Jimmy 's card had cowboys and horses on it and a lasso. It was my favorite and I kept it for years. He also gave me modeling clay - that was the best present too! I will always remember him fondly as I do the whole Welsh and Phillips families. I share in this time of grief with you.

I am disappointed to learn of Jim's passing. As a fellow classmate from GHS '61 we enjoyed the time together as student volunteers with the Fire Department. Jim loved his time there and was proud to be of service to his community. We lost track of each other over time with re-locating, but knowledge of his dedication to fellow veterans will always be remembered.

Message from American Legion State Baseball Commission
March 24, 2017 9:03 AM

Dear Jenny and the Welsh family:

On behalf of myself and the American Legion State Baseball Commission, I wish to extend our deepest sympathies on Jim's passing.

As a District/Region Baseball chairman and member of the State Baseball Commission, Jim was a dedicated baseball man who always quietly and unassumingly worked hard at anything asked of him or duties he took on. His interest was always in putting on a quality baseball experience for the young men playing American Legion Baseball.

Jim will be missed by all of his friends involved with American Legion Baseball.

It is with deep sorrow that I hear of Mr. Welch's passing. I knew him while a student in the Granville School system but my most cherished memory of him came a few years after graduating from GHS.

I returned home to visit while on leave from the Army and was treated very rudely by some people protesting our military and especially our involvement in Central America.

I ran into him at the gas station shortly afterwards. He made an effort to approach me and talk to me. After explaining what had just happened, I could tell that not only was he shocked, upset and angry about how I had been treated, I could also tell that he was saddened and embarrassed about it.

Mr. Welsh truly cared about the military and his fellow vets. He was one of the few people in Granville that I respected and that I knew was a true, Patriotic American.

I am a much better man to have known him. I sincerely mourn his passing.
