James Masterson Obituary

A funeral mass celebrating the life of James A. Masterson, 85, of Granville will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at The Church of St. Edward the Confessor, 785 Newark-Granville Rd, in Granville with Msgr. Paul P. Enke as celebrant.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.  Private burial will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery.

Jim passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.  He was born in Cleveland, OH to the late Hugh Albert and Mary Masterson.  Jim leaves behind an enduring legacy, beginning with his wife of 60 years, their five devoted children, 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. They will carry on the family values and educational priorities that they learned from him and through his lifelong example.

Jim attended Miami University and was a graduate of Fenn College, presently known as Cleveland State, where he earned his B.A. in mechanical engineering. His life-long career in natural gas, specifically pressure regulation, began in Cleveland as a sales representative. Later, Jim accepted a transfer to Granville in 1966.  He eventually started his own company, Master Controls, where he worked until retirement.

Jim was a member of The Church of St. Edward the Confessor, Knights of Columbus #10876, and Granville Rotary.  He was also a member of the North American Bluebird Society where he was instrumental in the making, distributing, and careful monitoring of many bluebird houses currently present in the Granville area. He was an enthusiastic African violet grower and enjoyed volunteering at the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, and wintering in Sanibel Island.  He was an avid reader, especially of all things historical. He loved listening to classical music and to the tunes of Patsy Cline.  More than anything, Jim loved his family, making it the focus in his life.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Marianne (VandeVelde) Masterson; children and spouses, Maura (Doug) Miller of Sunbury, Hugh A. (Carrie) Masterson of Granville, Kate (Mike) Barrett of Granville, Sheila (Paul) Hawkinson of Cincinnati, and Paula (Gary) Rosenstein of Columbus; grandchildren, Kevin and Jane Miller; Mallory (Nathan) Sauer, Maura and Grant Masterson; Jack, Tom and Ross Barrett; Mary Grace and Katie Hawkinson; and Henry and Audrey Rosenstein; and one great-grandchild, Rose Sauer.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Masterson.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul with a memo directed to the Food Pantry, 135 Wilson St., Newark, OH 43055.
