Edgar S. Cheaney, 95, died October 17th, 2017 . He was born on April 24, 1922 to James W. and Margaret (Power) Cheaney in Petersburg, Illinois. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Emergency. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1944 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After working at Allis Chalmers in Springfield, Illinois, for several years, he began his career at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio in 1957, primarily working in transportation engineering. From 1977 to 1990, Ed was especially proud to direct the Aircraft Safety Reporting System (ASRS) program in Sunnyvale California, with the purpose of improving air travel safety standards and regulations.

Ed married Terrie (Harriett) Mueller in 1944 and they joyfully celebrated their 73rd anniversary together this past August. Ed was a loving father to Sally (Alger), Paula (Bowers), Phebe (Engel) and David, and grandfather to Hannah Levin, Sarah Gabel, Jordan Quickel, Maggie Fryer, Clara Eckel and Grace Engel. He has three dear great-granddaughters, Cheaney, Tenley and Piper Gabel.

Ed was a longtime member of the Broad Street Presbyterian Church and choir, periodically serving as Elder. He and Terrie moved to Kendal @ Granville in 2005 as founding residents.

Ed had many passionate interests, a boundless curiosity, and delightful attention to detail. As an avid reader, Ed led and participated in book clubs with family and friends. He loved classical music and jazz, and “kept up with the kids” by being one of the family’s earliest adopters of modern technologies, such as his Kindle. In the 1980-90s, he took flying lessons and gave his family some very delightful (and safe) rides in the clouds. Because of his lifelong woodworking talents, creations he designed and built are seen and used daily at Kendal, leaving one of many legacies that will last for years to come.

A special thanks to the staff at Kendal and the Hospice team who made his last days so comforting for Ed and his family.
